Key Considerations for Replacing Riello Thermostats


When replacing a Riello burner thermostat, the most important factor is not merely matching the physical appearance; you must verify that the control method, contact configuration, voltage, temperature sensor type, and wiring method are fully compatible.


Pay special attention to these 8 points during replacement:


1. Confirm the exact burner model


Do not rely solely on the series name (e.g., "Riello," "RS," "RG," or "GS").

Suffixes such as /1, /2, /M, /E, or BLU may indicate different control methods.


2. Identify the type of the original thermostat


Mechanical thermostat

Electronic thermostat

Thermocouple

PT100 / RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector)

Other temperature sensors


Note: A thermocouple cannot be directly replaced by a standard thermostat.


3. Verify the power supply voltage

Common voltages include 24V, 110V, and 220/230V; do not judge voltage based on appearance alone.


4. Confirm the output method

This is a critical step. Check if the original thermostat output is:


Passive dry contact

Normally Open (NO)

Normally Closed (NC)

Voltage output


If the burner control input requires a dry contact, you must not simply feed 220V directly into it.


5. Determine if it is a single-stage or two-stage burner


Single-stage:


Thermostat controls burner start/stop


Two-stage:


TL controls start/stop

TR controls high/low fire switching


Therefore, when replacing the thermostat on a two-stage burner, you cannot focus on just one contact point.


6. Photograph the wiring before replacement


Before disconnecting power, it is best to photograph:


The original thermostat's nameplate

The wiring terminals

The position of each wire

The burner control box model


7. Pay attention to the temperature range


For example, if a boiler requires control within the 30–90°C range, you cannot simply swap in any thermostat just because it is a "thermostat." You must also consider temperature accuracy, probe type, and installation method.


8. Do not test only the thermostat after replacement


You must also check the burner for the following:


Does it start normally at low temperatures?

Does it stop normally after reaching the set temperature?

Does a two-stage model switch between stages correctly?

Does a fault lockout occur?

Does the control box trigger any abnormal alarms?
