How to Select a Thermostat for a Riello Burner


You cannot select a thermostat for a Riello burner based solely on the burner model number. The choice depends primarily on the burner's control method, the boiler type, and whether you need to control start/stop operations or switch between low and high firing rates.


1. Common Selection Methods


Burner Type | Typical Thermostat Required | Function

Single-stage | Single-stage thermostat / Boiler thermostat | Controls burner start/stop

Two-stage | Two-stage thermostat | Controls 1st stage and 2nd stage firing

Progressive two-stage | High/low fire thermostat | Controls firing rate based on temperature

Proportional/Modulating | Temperature probe + Modulating controller | Continuously adjusts load based on temperature

Space heating | Room thermostat | Controls burner based on room temperature

Hot water boiler | Boiler water temperature thermostat | Controls burner based on water temperature


Riello burner wiring typically includes a TL (Limit thermostat/demand thermostat), and some two-stage models also include a TR (2nd stage thermostat). For instance, official Riello documentation clearly distinguishes between TL and TR for two-stage wiring.


2. For Standard Riello Burners


For common models such as the Riello RG, R40, 40 G/GS, or RL, first determine the type:


① Single-stage


Generally, you only need:


Boiler thermostat → Controls burner start/stop


Example: When the water temperature reaches 80°C, the thermostat opens (cuts off), and the burner stops; it restarts once the temperature drops.


② Two-stage


You need to consider:


TL: Controls burner start/stop

TR: Controls switching between 1st stage and 2nd stage firing


Official Riello wiring documentation indicates that the 2nd stage thermostat connects to the corresponding T6–T8 terminals, and jumper settings must be configured according to the specific model's wiring diagram.


3. A Crucial Point: Don't Just Look for a "220V Thermostat"


When selecting a thermostat, many people simply ask:


"Is this a 220V thermostat?"


In reality, the configuration of the thermostat's output contacts is far more important. For example, the burner requires:


A passive dry contact (on/off contact)


—rather than simply connecting an external 220V signal directly to the burner's control terminals.


Riello's official documentation also explicitly states that for certain TL (T1, T2) applications, a 230 VAC isolation relay must be used, with the relay's dry contact then connected to the T1/T2 terminals.
